In theory, Southampton are in ideal position for a good FA Cup run.

They’ve won all four FA Cup ties against Southampton and went on to lift the trophy in three of those, the last time in 2017. The 2003 meeting was the final itself, Robert Pires scoring the only goal of the game.

Arsenal have a special relationship with this competition and have gone on to win it five more times since beating Saints 18 years ago.

That run includes four of the last seven which has taken them top of the all-time win charts with 14 FA Cup triumphs.
Perhaps there’s a feeling that they’re timing their run perfectly again. Mikel Arteta’s side were in awful form a couple of months ago but have put together a run of six unbeaten, including four wins.

One of those victories was an extra-time success over Newcastle in round three. They rode their luck at times in that one before Emile Smith Rowe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted after 109 and 117.
